The sun had almost set when Gabriela awoke. She quickly showered and put on a flattering dress and killer heels. Taking a seat at her vanity, she pulled her hair up and quickly pinned it back. Concealer under her eyes, blusher, powder, mascara and lip gloss. She still looked like a pale waif.

If she hurried, she had time to stop by the nursery to see Gustavo. Maybe also rock and feed him. If she hurried that is.

She flung open the bedroom door. Carlos stood in the hall. “Hola, Señora.”

“Hola, Carlos. I will just be a minute then you can walk me down to dinner,” she called back to him as she rushed down the hall to the nursery. She almost tripped in her haste, and it didn’t help that she hadn’t worn heels since before Gus was born.

She’d had difficulty balancing while pregnant, and Max had insisted that she be as careful as possible. To make up for outlawing heels, he had offered her sumptuous Italian leather flats. When she couldn’t make up her mind, he’d ordered them all. He had been so generous and caring. Would he ever be that way with her again?

Lost in her thoughts, she barely heard Carlos calling after her. “Wait…the Señor is waiting for you downstairs.” Gabriela hadn’t paid Carlos any attention when he had asked her to wait, and she completely ignored him as he said this.

She burst through the door to the nursery and found Rosa folding blankets. “Shush, Señora, he is finally down for the night.”

Gabi slipped to the crib and leaned down to caress her son’s hair. Her heartstrings pulled, and at that moment, she knew she would never willingly leave him again. She rubbed his small head a few times then eased away.

Anger surged through her as she turned on Carlos in the hall. “Did you have orders to follow me about?”

He inclined his head—in deference or agreement? “Señora, please speak to the Señor about this. I am only taking orders.”

“I will most definitely speak to the Señor.”

Max was taking this privacy idea a little too far. She marched down the stairs. The time to confront him about this was now. To get this over and done with, she had to explain her case to him so he would then see that she left out of fear and love. He had to forgive her, and he had to help her. After she explained about her brother, he would see her side of things.

She inhaled deeply to quiet her pounding heart. Facing Max in anger wasn’t beneficial to her case. Pleading wasn’t constructive either. She had to approach him in a way that would encourage him to listen to her side of the story.

She entered the large dining room and appreciated her husband for the thousandth time. He was already seated, but he stood as she entered. Even upset with her, he was still a gentleman at dinner. He wore black dress slacks and a dark dinner jacket with a white button-up shirt.
